Things to do locally

Portmellon is a picturesque coastal inlet between the working fishing village of Mevagissey and the unspoilt village of Gorran Haven. It has a sandy beach with easy access and is on the Cornish coastal path providing some fantastic walks in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

At low tide in Portmellon there is a large beach with plenty of rockpools for exploring. At high tide the water comes right up to the road side completely covering the beach. Swimming here is considered safe but there are no lifeguards on patrol. On some occasions seals can be seen swimming off the beach or resting on the rocks. There is also a public slipway for launching boats and sailing dinghy’s. The true nature of this delightful little east facing cove is betrayed by the fact that all the houses along the sea front have stout wooden shutters which can be closed over their windows for those times when storms drive the waves over the sea wall. This is a rare but fantastic sight to see.
